In business, we have what I refer to as “the three Ts” - tools, techniques and thinking.  Let's define them for the purposes of this discussion.

  • Tools - the devices that help us get things done.
  • Techniques - how to use the tools that help us get things done.
  • Thinking - how we process data so that it become usable information.

Thinking is the most overlooked way to leverage tools and techniques. We are always introduced to new tools and new techniques and we do adjust our thinking accordingly.

Our thinking can become stagnant, stale and outdated very quickly based on our circumstances and resources. The bad thing is we don't recognize it when it happens; thus, we can keep walking around with bad misinterpreted data (which leads to "wrong thinking") and not even know it.

When you walk around with "wrong thinking," all the new fancy tools and techniques will do you no good.

How do you fix your thinking?

The first thing to do is slow down and take a look. Take a complete inventory on what is really happening — not what you wish would happen, but what is actually happening. And start asking questions.  For starters:

 – What's working?
 – What's not working?
 – What's stressing me?
 – What makes me happy?
 – Who and/or what is causing me grief?
 – What is wasting my time?
 – What is taking up my time?
 – What do I hate to do?
 – What do I like to do?
 – Who's better at this than I am?
 – What is confusing me?
 – Where am I wasting money?
 – Who is wasting my time?

Get real with yourself and your business and you'll start to see some miraculous things happening.

Success in life is made up of two things: questions and answers.

Ask better questions. Get better answers.

Let me know what happens as you start answering these questions for youself. I am interested in your findings.

Solid stuff sir. I like the Three T's. Thinking is good for business. Sometimes it seems that some people feel that if you're thinking you're not working. I'll take my chances thinking a little up front and working smarter, than not thinking at all and working harder.

Thank you Brent. Planning up front for any project will eliminate backtracking later.

This is a good list. We're so close to situations that it is difficult to see ourselves with enough reality to react correctly. Having a good list of questions makes the job easier.

Scot:

Lists are great.

Get it out of your head and on paper. Make a list or a mindmap something just have something to think with. What do you use to make thinking easier?
