Summary: Insightful Interview: Using Social Media As An Effective Promotional Channel
The Barack Obama Presidential Campaign has indeed demanded the attention of the entire nation. The masterful use of social media has been incredible.
But of course, the key is to look beyond what the world is evaluating (politics) to ferret out what this campaign can teach us as we grow and expand the reach of our businesses.
The purpose of the social media segment of our business promotion is to connect with those who may be interested in our product or service and then move them to take action to engage with us on some level. This interview will get you on the inside of the thinking behind the deployment…
For the past several months, Brent Leary – Technology for Business Sake and I have been following and reporting on the masterful use of social media by the Barack Obama Presidential Campaign. This has been a wonderful case study to watch and learn how to leverage the power of multimedia and social media to effectively propel a message and engage a market. The primary sites are BarackObama.com and my.BarackObama.com. (social media hub)
As we continued our case study, we recently interviewed Jascha Franklin-Hodge, co founder and chief technology officer for Blue State Digital. Blue State Digital actually did the work. Meaning, they created the websites and online presence that has captured over 1M email addresses in less than 18 months and helped support the effort to raise over $250M in donations.
To learn any new skill, I find it is best to follow those who are actors in the marketplace. These are the ones who have uncommon practical experience that will never be found in a book and most times will never be documented and you have to engage them in the moment because it is easy to forget the details and thinking that surrounds a successful project. We remember what goes wrong and forget what goes well.
No matter what your political affiliations, this interview provides an overview of the overall promotional and engagement strategy for what looks to be the most successful social media initiative to date.
This insightful interview Using Social Media As A Promotional Strategy is well worth your time.

You guys are so right on. The saying that "Success leaves clues" is so true. I also found out by looking through the source code of Barack Obama's site and some of the emails I have received that some web marketing work is also done by "doubleclick dot com". Correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Owen,
Thanks for the comments. I follow you. So you went deeper and checked the source code. NICE. Doubleclick is one of the vendors. It is a tracking program. Without tracking, your efforts are meaningless.
Good interview, David, thanks.
They also included more than just social media in their online strategy. We recently wrote about how the Obama campaign used Conversion Rate Optimization to maximize their online donations. Pictures of the test page variations are available here:

I truly enjoyed the interview with BSD's Jascha Franklin-Hodge… the "Tivo" and "Feed Back Loop" information was superb!
Rock solid example of how to generate major buzz and get people involved from the ground up as opposed from the top down to champion a common goal or cause.
Thank you!
Continued Success,
Richard L. Turner jr.
@Chris - Good to speak to you. I will look into getting the testing parameters for the Obama website. That for sure would be interesting information.
@Richard - Glad the you enjoyed the interview. This campaign contains a myriad of lesson that can applied immediately to a business. We just finished the last installment and are now going back to review all the information that we have compilied and gathered over the last several months.
