The Changing Face Of Social Media

Is social media really changing? Nope…

Are you really using social media to further your knowledge and reach in the marketplace? Or, are you just following the masses online to follow those who already have an (offline) following?

Celebrities Need Followers

Human nature is the same online and offline. So, this is not a surprise. Celebrities are supported by those who follow them offline. Why would this be any different online? With an offline following, you can drive traffic to movies, album sales and even websites.

Take this back to the days of television advertising. If you could get the attention, you could drive sales. Back to the days of direct mail, if you could get the attention, you could drive traffic. Back to the town friar, if you could get the attention, you could drive traffic.

Celebrity endorsement is one of the basic mechanisms of advertising.

People “want” movie stars.

The dynamic of twitter has changed significantly over the last several months. Celebrities are coming into the social media space and the followings that they are creating are incredible. But what is the underlying lesson to be learned here?

Mass Appeal and Public Attention is the what being a celebrity is all about.

Celebrities are there because of the attention that we give them.

Notice: Those featured in this video have access to mass marketing and have built attention and value in sports entertainment and entertainment spaces.

Entertainment has value; it is an escape. And, the budgets are huge. So look beneath the surface. And see the connection and migration online of an a natural extension of an offline phenomenon

The question becomes what is the attention that you want for you and your business. What are you doing that is remarkable? What are you doing that people find interesting?

But more important, what are you doing that people find valuable and worthy of attention. We can’t all be in the movies or have a talk show that is in national syndication.

But, we can all create value in the markets that we serve. Being a celebrity with “market reach” is one thing. Being valuable to those you communicate with and serve is completely different.

The key is to use the media. Not be swept away by it.

Take Care,

David Bullock
